Journey to Restoration: From Surviving to Thriving

I recently had the incredible opportunity to attend the Shield of Sisters event, Journey to Restoration, a powerful gathering centered around the theme From Surviving to Thriving. This event brought together fellow survivors of military sexual trauma (MST) and others who had experienced trauma in childhood. Each story, each shared experience, resonated deeply with my own healing journey.

The Power of Connection & Healing

One of the most impactful aspects of this event was the community—women from different walks of life coming together, supporting one another, and fostering healing through shared experiences. Whether it was engaging in deep conversations, attending powerful speaker sessions, or simply sitting in solidarity, the connections formed here were life-changing.

I had the honor of meeting Shanon Hugh, the visionary behind Shield of Sisters. Her dedication to creating safe spaces for survivors to heal and thrive is truly inspiring.

Unforgettable Moments & Insights

There were so many incredible highlights from the event:

The Writing Panel Discussion – I was privileged to sit alongside a group of strong, courageous women as we shared our experiences of healing through storytelling. Writing is more than just words—it is a bridge to understanding, connection, and transformation.

The Impact of MST & Suicide Risk Presentation – One of the most eye-opening presentations discussed the direct link between MST and suicide risk. This session reinforced the urgent need for awareness, resources, and support for survivors.

Meeting My Piano Coach Through Creative Vets – Music has been a part of my healing journey, and finally meeting my coach through Creative Vets was a full-circle moment for me.

Co-Leading Breakout Sessions on Emotional Resilience – Emotional resilience is the key to moving from surviving to thriving, and I was honored to co-lead four breakout sessions with the amazing Adhana.

A Young Woman’s Testimony – Perhaps one of the most powerful moments for me as a coach was when a young woman came up to me and shared her own story of trauma. Knowing that my presence and words could create a safe space for her reinforced why I do this work.

Art as a Symbol of Strength

During the event, a beautiful art piece was donated by an organization that supports nonprofits. The imagery in the painting symbolizes strength, resilience, and the inner light that continues to shine despite hardship.

Final Thoughts & A Call to Action

The Journey to Restoration conference was an unforgettable experience—one that reminded me of the power of community, healing, and transformation. Meeting fellow survivors, expanding my network, and hearing stories of overcoming trauma reaffirmed my mission to be a bridge for others on their journey to healing.

If you or someone you know has experienced MST or trauma, I encourage you to seek out resources, find a community that uplifts you, and begin your own journey from surviving to thriving.

Let’s continue these conversations. Share this post, connect with organizations like Shield of Sisters, and support survivors on their journey to restoration. You are not alone. 💙
